The Mess We're In

Our lives are always changing, battered about by events both personal and massive in scale. The natural reaction to this constant uncertainty is to turn inward and begin to question where we belong in this worldwide chaos of fluctuating demands and mutable allegiances. One writer featured in this quarter's issue wonders if he can make it as part of his peer group when he feels like the veteran of a war that he never fought in; in another piece, the protagonist takes control of the life of a child in an attempt to find where she fits in her own. The people in these works find their true places through fantasy, through the language of nature and spirituality, and even through real estate, all of them moving slightly closer to knowing where they have come from and where they are going.
